About the Project
Cancel culture is currently known as an online phenomenon, a form of publicly shaming a person, action, or idea on social media, which results in a person being publicly shamed and exiled, as they are given no chance of redemption and/or improvement. It has also become a form of online activism that threatens to and makes problematic figures of authority be stripped off from their positions of power because of intolerable behavior.
Publicly ostracizing someone who made a mistake does not allow the opportunity to change, thus denying an individual’s personal growth and curbing bad behaviors, or unlearning toxic mindsets. This weaponization is what causes the harm that cancel culture brings.
Summary of the Project
Backlash: Cancel culture as a double-edged sword is a multimedia journalism project that features a three-part long-form vertical storytelling narrative entailing the good and bad effects of cancel culture. The interactive website aims to contextualize how cancel culture is applied in the Philippines: its beginnings, how Filipinos use this behavior, its pervasiveness, and its impact on society.

Through reading the stories shared here and gaining an understanding of how cancel culture was used in each one, the creators of the website hope that the readers would be able to see cancel culture for what it is: warts and all.
